Feminist Principles
- Woman abuse is rooted in our patriarchal culture.
- Women are an oppressed group in society, having less economic, social and political power than men.
- The personal is political – a woman’s personal situation is reflective of her situation in society.
- Woman abuse has been condoned and tolerated by society.
- Woman abuse is a crime.
- Woman abuse is part of a larger problem of violence to women and those less powerful, i.e. sexual harassment, sexual assault, pornography, homophobia and racism.
- Woman abuse is a community issue; we are all part of the problem and can be part of the solution.
- Attitudes and beliefs need to be changed at individual, community and societal levels.
- A comprehensive approach is essential, including prevention, intervention and advocacy.
- A coordinated community service approach is needed. Collaboration needs to occur with all agencies dealing with abused women and their families.
