POSTERS
These abuse posters have been developed in partnership with Ernestine's Women's shelter in Etobicoke.
They created the posters and their campaign involved displaying all 3 posters throughout the Toronto Transit System for a one year period. The feedback they received was incredibly positive and successfully achieved its goal in heightening awareness of the issue of violence against women in the Greater Toronto Area.

Women's Crisis Services was ecstatic when Ernestine's agreed for us to replicate the campaign in our region. Our campaign was to involve displaying all 3 posters in regional city buses via the Grand River Transit system. Unfortunately, Grand River Transit has only agreed to display two of the posters - excluding the pregnant woman - with the caveat that should they receive complaints, the posters will be removed.

Yes, the posters are difficult to look at - they show the realities of abuse - which makes most people uncomfortable. But it's critical that we address this issue in the public realm. For, if we can't address it in public, how can we begin to end it in private? We need to move beyond the belief that what goes on behind closed doors is a private matter. This "look the other way" thinking contributes to the continuance of the cycle of violence.

The fact that Waterloo Regional Police respond to 6000 domestic violence calls per year illuminates the extent of violence against women in Waterloo region. By continuing to deny that domestic violence exists in Waterloo region only contributes to exacerbate its existence.

These posters are individually available to the public. For further information, please contact: Executive Director, Mary Zilney at mary.zilney@wcswr.org
