The end of summer is near, which means we are preparing for “back to school” here at the shelter. There are currently 22 school aged children residing at Anselma House in Kitchener, and 15 school aged children at Haven House in Cambridge. Each family receives support from the Child and Youth team around back to school needs including, school registrations, school transfers, safety plans and school supplies.

We are happy to inform you of the Safe School Protocol that is in effect between Women’s Crisis Services and both the Waterloo Region District School Board and Waterloo Catholic District School Board. This protocol allows for the children accessing our shelters to return to their home school, or transfer to a new school with a safety plan in place. This protocol also assists families in obtaining safe transportation for their children to and from school daily. Safety is of the utmost importance for the families accessing our shelters, and through this protocol, they can have peace of mind when returning to school.

It is not only the schools that help create a seamless transition for the children; the donations from our community allow the children to return to school equipped with all of the supplies they need.  We recently received very generous donations of backpacks that will be distributed to the children for back to school. For this we are very grateful!

Here at Women’s Crisis Services, we wish all of the children in the KW region a safe and happy school year!
