As the cold weather starts to creep in and the days are getting shorter, the women and children at Haven House and Anselma House are spending less time outside. Often we will see them settling in with a donated book, scootching around residence in a knitted pair of slippers and playing board games with other residents. When the frost comes, we will undoubtedly see our Residential workers pull out our well stocked supply of hats, scarves and mittens, as well as some donated quilts to keep everyone warm and protected from the winter weather. Yes, Waterloo region has always answered the call when our residents are in need.

Over the past year, and even recently, we have called on you to help us with donations of urgently needed items. Such calls have been for bath towels, shampoo and conditioner, bus tickets, and of course diapers. These are the supplies that we go through the quickest and that are used most frequently.  Each time we ask, we receive. Our friend at Advocate Insurance have held two special events where they asked the attendees to bring diapers or towels. This generated two trucks full of such supplies for the women and children in our care! Several school aged children have shown their care and support by asking their birthday party friends to bring supplies for our shelter and one little man, who’s mom was pregnant, wanted to make sure all of the babies would have diapers, so he and his mom brought in a few boxes to Anselma House.

As the holidays approach, we know that our friends will again be thinking of us and how they can help. We are so fortunate to receive calls from school groups, office committees, friends, volunteers and others who just want to make sure the holidays are bright for those in shelter and that they have what then need to get them through the winter. Because of these phone calls and your very generous support, we have created an online wish list. This list will be kept up to date so that  you know exactly what our residents need at any given time. Unfortunately, it is difficult for us to receive items that are not on this list, as we then have to sort and store them. If the items aren’t on our list, we are not in need and would direct you to donate them to our partners, also listed on our Wish List.

Another thoughtful way to show your support is by donating gift cards. When a woman receives a gift card, it gives her independence and allows her to make the choice of colour, size, quantity or quality. Popular gift cards are Shoppers Drug Mart, WalMart, Target, Grocery Stores and for the teens we recommend Chapters, Tim Hortons or Starbucks,  or general MALL gift cards so that they can have the experience of shopping.

Thank you for always answering the call when the women and children we serve are in need. Because of you, we are better able to help our community move beyond violence.
